Child-Appropriate TTRPGs
Over the course of the various events that I host, I've come across several parents/guardians who would love to have a place for their children to play D&D or some such TTRPG (Tabletop Roleplaying Game), but don't have access to a suitable space. Some guardians have a lively game of their own and want to pass down the love and enjoyment of TTRPGs but know that their weekly game is for sure a kid-free table. Others know their kids would love a chance to play, but it really just isn't the guardian/parent's thing.
D&D Clubs in school are becoming more popular around Louisville, but nearly all that I've seen are in high schools, with slim options for middle schoolers and elementary aged kids with the ability to play TTRPGs.
If it garners enough interest, No Dice can run a kid-focused D&D event/game. I already run a TTRPG basics and safety tools summer camp with the Jewish Community Center each year, I've run TTRPGs for years, and I've been a substitute teacher, camp counselor, childcare supervisor, and youth pastor. I use TTRPG safety tools, everyday objects, interactive D&D props, and LEGOs to keep my sessions engaging, safe, and inclusive!

Benefits of D&D?
D&D is like playing "house" or playing "war" but with rules so that when one kid says "I shot the bad guy" and the other kid says "no, they're my friend, I will save them" we can figure out which one happens in the story without it just being whoever has the strongest will.
TTRPGs are good for adults too, but there are several particularly pertinent reasons why a TTRPG like D&D could be really helpful for a kid.
Creativity & Imagination
D&D encourages children to unleash their creativity and imagination as they create and inhabit unique characters, explore fantastical worlds, and solve challenges through storytelling and role-playing.
Social Skills Development
Playing D&D requires teamwork, communication, and collaboration as players work together to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. It provides a platform for children to practice social skills such as negotiation, compromise, and conflict resolution in a supportive and interactive environment.
Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving
D&D challenges children to think critically and strategically as they encounter complex puzzles, make decisions, and adapt to unforeseen circumstances during gameplay. It promotes problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, and creative problem-solving approaches.
Literacy & Numeracy Skills
Engaging with the rules, character sheets, and game mechanics of D&D involves reading comprehension, numeracy, and basic arithmetic skills. Children may improve their literacy and numeracy skills as they interpret rules, calculate probabilities, and track character statistics during gameplay.
Emotional Intelligence
D&D provides opportunities for children to explore and express a range of emotions through their characters, interactions with NPCs (non-player characters), and decisions within the game world. It fosters emotional intelligence by encouraging empathy, self-awareness, and understanding of others' perspectives.
Confidence Building
Participating in D&D can boost children's confidence and self-esteem as they take on the roles of heroes, make impactful decisions, and contribute to the success of their party. It offers a safe space for children to experiment with different identities, voice their ideas, and take risks without fear of judgment.
Empathy & Morality
D&D encourages children to consider ethical dilemmas, moral choices, and the consequences of their actions within the game world. It promotes empathy by allowing players to inhabit diverse characters with their own beliefs, values, and motivations, fostering a deeper understanding of morality and ethics.
Community & Friendship
D&D fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie among players as they come together to share adventures, experiences, and stories. It provides opportunities for children to connect with peers who share similar interests, build lasting friendships, and develop a sense of community within the gaming group.
